Cardiac Rehabilitation

Cardiac Rehabilitation is a physician-supervised program for people who have either congenital or acquired heart disease.

Program participants may or may not have had a heart attack or heart surgery (or other heart procedures). Cardiac rehabilitation can often improve functional capacity, reduce symptoms, and create a sense of well-being for patients. A physician may prescribe cardiac rehabilitation for a patient in certain situations. Cardiac rehabilitation programs can be conducted while a person is a hospital inpatient or on an outpatient basis. A cardiac rehabilitation program is designed to meet the needs of the individual patient, depending upon the specific heart problem or disease, and should be supervised by a physician and a team of cardiac professionals.

For more information, please contact Pleasant Valley Hospital Cardiac Rehabilitation at (304) 675-4340, ext 2002.

Diabetes Education (Outpatient Education Program)

Using a team approach, the education program provides the basic knowledge and skills needed to promote the concept of overall patient wellness, and to encourage people with chronic diabetes to manage their condition appropriately and successfully.

The team begins with you ... the person with diabetes and includes your physician, the diabetes nurse educator, the dietitian, pharmacist and exercise physiologist. After you meet with the nurse educator and dietitian, you will attend classes to learn how to manage your diabetes.

Class 1: Medications and Carbohydrate Counting
Class 2: Monitoring/Regulating complications and living with diabetes.
Class 3: Meal planning and exercise
Class 4: Personal health habits and changing behavior

Individualized Appointments
In addition to the information provided in the outpatient program you may require additional assistance with the following topics:

Insulin Administration: The diabetes nurse educator gives one-to-one instruction and reassurance for injecting insulin. Having someone with whom you can discuss personal fears with is very important.

Self-monitoring: If you and your doctor decide you will use a meter to monitor your blood sugar, you will find there are many meters on the market. The PVH nurse educator can give you guidance as to what is available, as well as how a particular meter a may fit your needs. It is very important to have the proper instruction in the use and care of any meter that is chosen.

Exercise

Along with medication and meal planning, exercise is an important component of diabetes management. Exercise can provide better control of blood glucose, decrease medications, prevent further complications for individuals with diabetes, as well as promote overall health and well-being. People with diabetes should consult with their personal physician prior to beginning an exercise program. And after speaking with their doctor, the exercise physiologist at the Wellness Center is available to provide individualized exercise prescription and instruction.
The exercise physiologist can be reached by calling, (304) 675-7222, ext 2005.

Diabetes Support Group

Often helpful for people with diabetes to share problems and ideas with others in similar circumstances. This group is open to all people with diabetes, their families and friends. Meetings are quarterly with featured speakers, discussing topics pertinent to diabetes management.
For more information call (304) 675-4340, ext 2004.

What Does Insurance Cover?

Most private carriers as well as Medicare will cover the cost of diabetes education when the patient has been referred to this particular program by a physician. If you do not have insurance and your doctor recommends diabetes education, call the Pleasant Valley Hospital Business office at (304) 675-4340, ext 1245 or ext 1255 to discuss alternative financial arrangements.

When it comes to surgery, it’s important to have access to the latest surgical advances close to home. At Pleasant Valley Hospital, our surgical team brings a personal touch with the sophistication of advanced medicine.

For almost 50 years, Pleasant Valley Hospital has grown and expanded, introducing new and innovative surgical procedures to the tri-county community. PVH now offers a full range of inpatient and outpatient surgical services.

Treatment at PVH includes advice on how patients can prepare for a surgery, what to expect during treatment and the best ways to make a fast, full recovery, professional consultation with your family doctor and other specialists and personal care and support to help ensure that treatment is safe, successful, and as comfortable as possible.

No surgery is routine from the patient’s point of view. Every patient is unique and every surgery is serious. We understand that patients and their families are concerned about surgical care. So we work closely with patients, families, and their family doctors to be sure that every question is answered and every concern is addressed. And because every patient – and every medical condition – is unique it’s important to have the right surgical team.

Our surgical teams are experienced in caring for patients of every age with virtually every kind of medical problem. They are qualified to care for people who need ear, nose, and throat surgery, gynecologic surgery (the female reproductive system), ophthalmologic surgery (eye), orthopedic surgery (bones, joints and connective tissue), and urologic surgery (the male reproductive system or of the urinary system in either sex).

Many surgical procedures are now performed on an outpatient basis which means shorter recovery time, less pain and less scarring for our patients. More complex procedures may require a stay in the hospital. The success of the surgical services program is brought together by the vision of Pleasant Valley Hospital leaders, the professional experience of the physicians and the skill of the surgical staff. Together this team has developed a strong surgical program when experience counts. View a list of PVH Surgical Services »

Neuro-Physiology Center

The Pleasant Valley Hospital Neuro-Physiology Center benefits patients with learning disabilities, cognitive disorders, sleep disorders, dementia, epilepsy, sensory disturbances of the peripheral and central nervous system and numerous other neurological conditions.

Each patient who comes to the facility has access to neurophysiological monitoring of the highest caliber. The experts at the PVH Neuro-Physiology Center use specialized neurophysiological monitoring during cranial base surgery to gain critical information about patient status. By recording electrical signals at different levels of the neuraxis or at different muscle groups, they can detect adverse changes before complications arise. Other services offered by the Neuro- Physiology Center include quantitative EEG, psychometric testing, and monitoring of visual, auditory, somatosensory, cognitive, and motor evoked potentials. Staff also performs functional brain mapping, a technique involving the direct electrical stimulation and recording of brain wave activity in patients undergoing surgery for epilepsy, brain tumors and vascular malformations.

Several commonly treated diseases of the central nervous system include:

• Cerebral palsy
• Movement disorders
• Multiple sclerosis
• Myasthenia gravis
• Neuropathy
• Spasticity
• Stroke
• Various forms of pain

brain imaging

The Pleasant Valley Hospital Neuro-Physiology Center is also pleased to offer several new physiologic tests. Tilt Table with Autonomic Testing is modeled after protocols utilized at West Virginia University and is useful for evaluation of patients with lightheadedness (dizziness), syncope or automatic dysfunction. The patient is tilted to 80 degree and heart rate, SaO2 and blood pressure are recorded at precise times. The test is preceded by R-R ratio during paced breathing. 48-Hour Ambulatory EEG testing can be scheduled if routine EEG fails to record an event and a longer recording period is needed. The patient wears the EEG leads home and the recording device is about the size of a small purse. The test also monitors heart rate. Multiple sleep latency testing (MSLT) is now available for patients with narcolepsy or excessive daytime sleepiness. MSLTs are recommended following a routine sleep study to ensure that the previous night’s sleep is not a causative factor for patient’s symptoms. This test consists of five 20-minute nap opportunities during the day. The test evaluates sleep onset time and if REM stage sleep occurs.

Other tests offered at the PVH Neuro-Physiology Center include:

• EEG
• Nerve conduction studies/EMG testing
• Polysomnosgraphy (PSG or sleep study)
• Video EEG (Up to 3 to 4 hours)
• Visual Evoked Potentials

Observation

Patients whose diagnosis and treatment can reasonably be completed within a 24-hour timeframe are sometimes kept “under observation.” This is to make sure that a patient’s response to any treatment he or she has received is verified, and that their condition is improved. Most commonly, they will be released to return home in about 24 hours. Occasionally, patients will be admitted to the medical center when their condition does not improve within 24 hours.

“Observation” status is not the same as being admitted to the hospital for care. Observation patients will spend their time in a surgery recovery room recliner or on a special gurney, rather than a hospital bed in an inpatient room (which are reserved for patients who require more acute treatment). The time observation patients are being monitored is relatively brief, measured in hours, rather than days. They stay until a diagnosis is confirmed or for brief treatment.

There are many similarities to being admitted to the hospital. If you are being observed, you can expect regular attention from a nurse to check on your condition and ask about your needs. You can expect a restful atmosphere, food (as your condition permits), pain management and blankets to keep you warm. You will receive care and compassion from the staff attending to you in the same full measure as you would receive in any other part of Pleasant Valley Hospital.

 Overview

Exciting changes have taken place in Pleasant Valley Hospital Radiology Services over the past few years. There has been extensive renovation to Pleasant Valley Hospital’s diagnostic imaging capabilities. A relocation of nuclear medicine, mammography and ultrasound has provided the hospital with an opportunity to expand services and offer patients and visitors a comfortable, contemporary setting while utilizing our facility to it’s fullest potential.

Ultrasound
Pleasant Valley Hospital’s ultrasound services is accredited by the American College of Radiology for its ultrasound lab, which performs abdominal, obstetrics, gynecology, vascular and cardiac ultrasounds. Ultrasound imaging is ideal for viewing the heart and the blood vessels. It can evaluate the heart wall, chamber and valve motion, as well as blood flow within the heart and blood vessels. It may be used to detect breast cysts or gallstones and to examine the prostate, liver, kidneys, pancreas, spleen, inflammation, stones or cysts and tumors in the colon and urinary bladder. The use of ultrasound is also expanding into the field of sports medicine as an effective way to detect ligament, tendon and nerve injuries. Ultrasound also can be used to guide needle placement for biopsies, and to guide the drainage of cysts or fluid collections in the abdomen or chest that occur with some illnesses. It is used in obstetrics to assess fetal well being, determine fetal position and multiple gestations (twins, triplets, etc.), determine a delivery date and rule out ectopic pregnancy. If the fetus is old enough and positioned correctly, a baby’s sex also can be determined. Ultrasound also plays a significant role in the evaluation and treatment of infertility.
Mammography

Mammography is the best way to find breast cancer early, because it can detect breast lumps up to two years before they can be felt. Finding a lump early significantly improves a woman’s chance of successful treatment. Pleasant Valley Hospital now provides a new product that dramatically eases the discomfort many women feel when they get a mammogram. The FDA-cleared foam cushion, called MammoPad, creates a softer, warmer mammogram.

64-Slice CT Scan

Computed Tomography scan, also called CT scan, is used for many types of diagnostic procedures. They may be used to examine the head to check for bleeding, tumors, blood clots or signs of stroke. Information supplied by CT scans can also be used to determine the stage of some types of cancer, which helps physicians decide how to treat the disease. Pleasant Valley Hospital’s new state of the art dual slice/sub second scanner will reduce patient exam time and produce quality images.

Bone Density

The bone densitometer uses small amounts of X-ray to produce images of the spine, hip, or even the whole body. The X-ray is composed of two energy levels which are absorbed differently by the bones in the body. Thetechnical term for the method is “dualenergy X-ray absorptiometry,” or DEXA. A computer is able to determine from these differences how much bone mineral is present. The spine and hip are measured because that is where osteoporotic fractures occur most. No special preparation is needed for a bone densitometry.

Nuclear Medicine

Pleasant Valley Hospital uses the latest imaging technology with its state-of-the-art nuclear medicine dual-head camera. Nuclear medicine is unique because it documents function as well as structure. For example, nuclear medicine allows physicians to see how a kidney is functioning, not just what it looks like. Common nuclear medicine procedures include thyroid studies, brain scans, bone scans, lung scans, cardiac stress tests, and liver and gallbladder procedures.

MRI

MRI has become the gold standard in imaging. The benefits of MRI are many, with new applications continually being developed through on-going research. The procedure is used for all parts of the body and is effective in the clinical evaluation of conditions such as brain disorders, eye abnormalities, tumor detection, knee and shoulder injuries, facial and neck abnormalities, cardiac malformation, traumatic injuries, spine diseases, liver and abdominal diseases, musculoskeletal disorders, infection and blood flow and vessel disorders. Appointments can be made with a physician referral.

The majority of patients treated will return to an active, healthy lifestyles without further intervention. Some chronic cases may find it beneficial to continue on a preventative schedule of periodic treatments to maintain a symptom-free lifestyle. This decision will be made based on the practitioner on a case-by-case basis.

Anodyne
The anodyne therapy system was designed to maximize the effectiveness of infrared photo energy by placing the light emitting diodes on direct skin contact. The infrared light releases nitric oxide, which causes increased blood flow. Anodyne improves circulation and decreases pain especially in the diabetic patient who suffers from peripheral neuropathy. For best results, anodyne must be paired with therapeutic exercise.

Massage Therapy
Massage therapy has become one of the fastest growing health-related professions in the nation. It has evolved into many modalities of advanced therapeutic techniques in healthcare environments. Massage is seen both as a science and an art. It is used as a medical treatment for specific ailments or injuries. It is also used to generate a sense of calm and internal healing which assists in bringing individuals into mental and emotional balance evoking a sense of well-being.

Massage therapy is especially beneficial to physical workers, desk workers, travelers and athletes who have added stress on their bodies. Therapeutic massage can also be an important addition to any fitness or sports program, helping a patient achieve performance goals with minimum injury and pain.

Massage therapy is one of the most effective means of relaxing muscle tissue and increasing circulation. Increased circulation provides more blood to the muscles and tissues providing the nutrients necessary for your body to heal itself. Tight muscles reduce blood flow, restricting enough blood to enter into the tissue, prolonging or halting the healing process and also causing muscles cells to die. This will eventually cause atrophy of the muscle tissue. This process can be reversed using massage.

Massage is unique in its ability to reduce and eliminate particular types of muscular pain. The kinetic nature of massage, which breaks down the natural tendency of muscles to adhere to one another, enhances range of motion and diminishes pain and joint problems.

Massage, on a regular basis will also have a positive, cumulative effect on the immune system. Lymph, which functions as a drainage fluid for your body’s bacteria, is substantially stimulated by massage. Done on a persistent basis, and depending on the individual patient, massage can increase the effectiveness of filtering this fluid which is a remarkable stimulant to the body’s own immunization capabilities.

Massage treatments are generally a half hour to one hour in length. In a private treatment room, the therapist interviews the client. The therapist then leaves the room and the client removes clothing as per their personal level of comfort. The client then lies down on a padded massage table and covers themselves with a sheet. The therapist will knock before re-entering the treatment room. To respect personal privacy while providing adequate warmth, only the part of the body being worked on is exposed at any given time. Ample time will be given to discuss the client’s needs with the therapist before the treatment begins.

Whether or not you are expected to talk with your therapist during a treatment is a personal decision. Some patients like to talk with the therapist and others prefer silence. If you have any specific needs during the session, please let the therapist know. For example, you may want deeper or lighter pressure. Communicating what you would like during the treatment treatment to the therapist is welcome.
